Dear Families,
Welcome to a new school year! My name is Kate Gugliotta and this is my tenth year teaching Art at Gillen Brewer. I have a M.A. in Art and Art Education from Teachers College, Columbia University and am currently pursuing an Ed.D. from Teachers College in the same field. I am also a painter and printmaker, most recently showing my work in September at the Macy Gallery at Columbia University. I am so excited to start a new school year and am looking forward to getting to know our new students and families, as well as continuing to work with returning students.
Over the next month, I will be working with each class on unique projects. The Otters and Clouds are learning about architecture and design. The Battleships and Pumpkins created backpacks from recycled materials to being their study of art around the globe and will learn about cultural celebrations (starting in Chinatown, NYC) and then “travelling” to Africa to learn about Kanga cloths. The Astronauts and Legos are creating mixed media artworks depicting transportation, and the Watermelons, Crayons, Lily pads and Apples will learn about line, shape and color through activities involving various drawing, painting, and collage materials, as well as song, dance, and movement.
One of my favorite things to do with my classes is to explore all of the amazing arts resources we have in New York City! Each class will be actively engaged with museums and community-based organizations. We have also joined forces with the Whitney, Cooper Hewitt Museum and the Metropolitan Museum of Art by continuing partnerships that bring our students to the museum a couple of times per year coupled with visiting artists who visit our classroom.
I like to send home several artworks at once, not individually. Many times, we refer back to art made in the past or will have our artwork on display throughout the school. This also allows for a rich conversation with your child about what they’ve been exploring in art – I suggest spreading all of the artworks out on a table or floor and having a mini critique of your own!
Just a side note, the paint that we use is non-toxic (as are all the materials in the Art Room) and may stain on light colors or certain fabrics. All children are encouraged to wear aprons/smocks. If your child does not like wearing one of our smocks, please feel free to send in an old shirt from home for them to wear to protect their clothes.
I look forward to getting to know all of you. Please feel free to contact me for any reason. My door is always open. Here’s to a wonderful, creative, and fun school year. Make sure to check the art room website frequently to see your child’s artwork and all that happens in art at GBS!
Sincerely,
Kate
